Circus

The lights come up and suddenly I see the colour,
Ears fill with the noise, the music, the sounds of laughter.
Sticky candyfloss in my hand on my face.
“Our little secret” he says.
My dad, my accomplice, my partner in crime.
Sneaking out of a darkened house
While little brother sleeps
To see the Circus.
Filled with excitement, joy, the feeling of being so grown up
(All of 6 years old)
The animals, the clowns and flying trapeze.
All faded in my memory to some generic version.
But the love, warm and glowing as I realise how lucky I am
To have the “bestest” daddy,
As he holds my little hand in his.
Is one of my favourite childhood memories.
